Ready to Finish- Get Your Graduate Degree Quick

For most of us, the thing we most want to do in graduate school is finish. There's nothing better than knowing the process is over. Anything that speeds up the process is good for us. So, how do you finish your graduate degree quickly without killing yourself in the process?

Go Full Time

First of all, go full time. Take between 9 and 12 hours a semester so that you can finish more quickly. Masters programs usually take about 36 hours to finish, so if you take 12 hours for three semesters, you can finish in a year and a half, unless of course you can take classes during the summer, and then you'd finish in a year.

Take Summer or Saturday Classes

I know, the idea of going to class during the summer or on Saturday seems like torture, but honestly it's not that bad. First of all, summer classes may go for an extra hour each time they meet, but they're usually over in six to eight weeks. Second, Saturday classes may take up half your Saturday for a semester, but you only end up meeting about 10 times for most classes - not such a bad trade off when you get to go a whole week, sometimes two, without giving your time to the class.

Use Your Old Classes

Talk to your professors and read the school catalog carefully. See if any of your undergraduate classes overlap so that you can get double credit from them. Even if you can't get the credit, if the entire class is a repeat, talk to the professor. There's a chance you could get out of coming all the time because of your previous knowledge and experience.

Choose the School Wisely

Find out exactly what it will take to finish in each of the programs you're considering. If you don't have all the prerequisites for one school, it could take an extra year or two for your to finish your program. Sometimes, you can save time by going to the same school for undergraduate and graduate school since many of your classes will probably overlap.

Stay Committed

One reason many people take so long to finish graduate school is that they get burned out. Instead of trying in their classes once they get tired, they simply give up or stop going. Thus, they get a failing grade or a withdrawal for those classes and have to repeat them before they can graduate.

Stay committed to the goal and remind yourself that if you can just make it through the classes, you'll finish early and begin working in a profession you love for more than you are currently making. Increased negotiation power is definitely worth all your hard work.
