Accounting and the Small Home Business
If you are like most beginning internet marketers, the idea of needing to do any kind of accounting for all your efforts online seems kind of silly. After all, will Uncle Sam really be interested in those $30.00 commission checks? But then, after a month or so of hard work, your business starts to take off and before you know it, you have some pretty big checks coming in and you realize that Uncle Sam probably will be interested in the income you are bring in. But how do you start now? And where do you start? For those who haven’t kept any records up to this point it can be overwhelming trying to figure out what to do and where to go next.
Accounting is very important for the small business owner as well as for the larger businesses. Even if your business is run out of your basement, it is important to keep track of all your expenditures as well as profits. There are tax advantages for having home offices, but you will need documentation for all your expenses that you hope to write off. For the very small business, just having a log where you write down the expenses that you pay as well as the income that you bring in might be enough. If you are looking to write off rent in your home or take advantage of home office tax breaks, your booking will have to be more complete.
Keeping good accounting records for your home business is very important if you hope to keep yourself out of trouble with your taxes. Taxes are not taken out of affiliate commissions. You need to find out if the company you are working for will send you a form 1099 stating how much money you have made or not. If not, it will be up to you to report that income to the government and pay any taxes owed on it.
It may be to your advantage to get some accounting advice if you are planning on starting a home business or if you have one, but haven’t started keeping records yet. It is certainly to your benefit to start sooner rather then later. Reconstructing old expenses can be difficult and if you don’t have documentation, you shouldn’t use it as an expense.
